The Best Weapon

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

The sun shimmered high above the grand palace of Emperor Akbar, where a lively argument buzzed through the air like a swarm of playful bees. Courtiers, dressed in bright, swirling robes, gathered around the royal dais, each trying to be the loudest. “The best weapon is the SWORD!” one shouted, waving his arms like a knight. “No, it’s the SPEAR!” another insisted, pretending to lunge forward. “It’s the BATTLE-AXE!” declared a third, flailing dramatically, as if in an epic tale of bravery.

Amidst all the excitement, Emperor Akbar furrowed his brow. He turned to his clever advisor, Birbal, who watched with a glimmer in his eye. “What do you think, Birbal?” the Emperor asked, curiosity sparkling in his voice. With a sly smile, Birbal replied, “The best weapon is whatever comes in handy when danger arrives.”

Akbar frowned, crossing his arms. “That’s not a real answer! Weapons are for battle!” Birbal’s eyes twinkled with mischief. “Perhaps I should show you?”

The next day, they wandered through the bustling streets, colors swirling like a painter’s palette. Suddenly, they found themselves in a narrow alley with tall stone walls. BOOM! A loud thunder echoed, and the ground shook. An enormous elephant, wild-eyed and trumpeting, charged toward them! THOOM! THOOM!

Akbar’s heart raced. He reached for his sword, but it felt tiny against the furious beast. They were trapped! Just then, Birbal spotted a tiny puppy, fur glimmering like sunlight, sleeping peacefully. With a quick motion, he scooped up the little pup and tossed it toward the elephant.

THWOOP! The puppy landed right on the elephant’s nose! The startled creature trumpeted in shock, skidding to a stop, confused. With a wild shake of its head, it turned and dashed away down the alley!

Akbar stood there, breathless and wide-eyed. “A puppy,” he whispered in disbelief. “A PUPPY just saved the Emperor!” Birbal smiled, his eyes sparkling with wisdom.

In that moment, Akbar realized that sometimes the smallest things can be the greatest heroes. Gratefully, he removed his pearl necklace and placed it around Birbal’s neck, celebrating the cleverness that turned an ordinary puppy into an extraordinary savior.
