The Five Questions

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a land filled with sparkling palaces and bright jewels, Emperor Akbar sat on his golden throne, his eyes twinkling with mischief. Today, he wanted to play a game with his cheerful courtiers, who wore colorful silks and fancy turbans. “Gather around!” he boomed, his voice echoing like a thunderstorm. “I have five tricky questions that will make you think and giggle!”

The courtiers bounced with excitement. “What is the BEST flower?” Akbar asked. “ROSE!” shouted half the courtiers, waving their arms like flying kites. “No, LOTUS!” cried the other half, jumping like bunnies. The hall buzzed with laughter as they debated, their voices mixing in a joyful whirlwind of colors!

“Let’s keep going!” said the Emperor, grinning. “Which milk is the BEST?” “Goat’s milk!” many shouted, nodding their heads. “Cow’s milk!” others countered. The room was alive with friendly arguments until Akbar raised his hand for silence. “What is the SWEETEST thing in the world?” he asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement. “Candy!” yelled one. “Honey!” shouted another, and everyone laughed.

“Now, what is the FINEST leaf?” Akbar whispered, ready for more fun. “And lastly, who is the GREATEST king?” he asked, and the courtiers cheered, “It’s YOU, Emperor Akbar!”

Just then, Birbal, the wisest of them all, entered the hall. With a twinkle in his eye, he bowed to the Emperor. “The best flower?” Akbar asked eagerly. “The cotton flower, Your Majesty. It becomes cloth for everyone!” The courtiers gasped in surprise.

“And the best milk?” Akbar continued. “A mother’s milk,” Birbal replied, “for it nurtures the child with love.” The court held its breath in awe.

“What is the sweetest thing?” Akbar leaned closer. “The tongue itself! It brings sweet words to our hearts!” The courtiers exchanged delighted glances.

Birbal smiled, “The finest leaf is the betel leaf. It brings friends together and spreads joy!”

Now came the moment everyone awaited nervously. “Who is the greatest king?” Akbar asked, raising an eyebrow. “King Indra,” Birbal said calmly. “He brings the rain that feeds our crops!”

Silence filled the room. Would Akbar be angry? But to everyone’s surprise, he burst into laughter! “Only Birbal could make me wish to be someone else and still feel honored!” The court erupted into cheerful giggles, realizing the magic of wisdom lies not just in the loudest voices, but in the cleverest answers that help everyone thrive.
