The Elephant's Footprint

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a vibrant kingdom filled with colorful flowers and singing birds, there lived a wise Emperor named Akbar and his clever friend, Birbal. Their bond was as strong as the sun shining in the sky, but one day, a storm cloud loomed over the royal court. Akbar and Birbal had a big argument, and in a huff, the Emperor bellowed, “LEAVE MY COURT!” With a respectful bow, Birbal transformed into a simple farmer and wandered off to a quiet village, where his brilliance was hidden beneath his humble clothes.

Back at the palace, chaos erupted like a bubbling pot. Problems piled up high—like magical mountains of dirty laundry! Arguments sparked like fireworks, and decisions were as slow as a sleepy turtle. The court was duller than a cloudy day, and Akbar felt a heavy ache in his heart; he missed his clever friend. But pride kept him from calling Birbal back, so he hatched a funny plan.

With a dramatic flourish, Akbar announced, “All landowners must bring their wells to Agra, or pay ten thousand gold coins!” The news spread like a gust of wind, and everyone gasped, “How can we move a well?”

In the distant village, Birbal overheard the commotion and grinned mischievously. He whispered a clever idea to the local landowner. The next day, the landowner arrived at the palace with a grin, declaring, “Your Majesty, we’ve brought our wells! Now, please send YOUR wells to greet them!”

Laughter erupted in the court, and Akbar couldn’t help but summon Birbal back. They celebrated together, banners waving and music dancing in the air. But Akbar had another challenge up his sleeve: “Guard my elephant’s footprint by the river for three days, and you shall earn a grand reward!”

After three days, Birbal returned, beaming with pride. “I’ve gathered one hundred thousand gold coins!” he announced. Akbar’s eyes widened in shock. “HOW?!”

With a twinkle of mischief, Birbal explained, “I put a stake near the footprint and told everyone that any house within reach would be knocked down to protect your royal footprint! Each householder paid handsomely to keep their homes safe!”

Akbar stared in amazement. “My brother-in-law tried guarding it for days and got nothing!”

Birbal smiled brightly. Together, they learned that while some simply follow orders, the clever ones find hidden treasures in every challenge.
