The Eagle and the Kite

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

High above the shimmering trees, where sunlight twinkled like stars, lived a magnificent Eagle named Elara. Her feathers sparkled like gold in the morning light, and she dreamed of finding a partner as bold and brave as she was. Birds of all sorts fluttered around her, singing sweet songs and trying to catch her eye, but Elara shook her head at them all. Some were pretty but weak, others had energy but were a bit too silly, and a few spoke with fancy words but lacked the courage she admired.

One bright, sunny morning, as Elara sat on her favorite pine tree, a colorful Kite named Kiko zoomed by. He noticed Elara’s serious face and swooped down with a curious tilt of his head. “Why the long face, mighty Eagle?” he asked, his wings flapping excitedly.

“I’m searching for a husband,” Elara sighed. “But no bird I’ve met is strong enough or brave enough for me.”

Kiko’s eyes sparkled mischievously. “Then your search is over! I am the bird you need!” he proclaimed, puffing out his chest proudly. “I can carry an Ostrich as easily as you can lift a feather!”

Elara’s eyes widened in wonder. An Ostrich? That was enormous! Captivated by Kiko's confidence, she agreed to marry him, dreaming of the grand adventures they would share.

The next day, her heart raced with excitement. “What will my husband bring me?” she thought, imagining a feast fit for an Eagle. But as the sun rose high, worry crept in. Where was Kiko?

At last, with a whoosh of colorful wings, Kiko returned. Elara’s heart fluttered, but when he landed, he dropped a scraggly little mouse at her feet. Elara stared in disbelief. “Where’s the Ostrich?” she gasped.

“Oh, that? I just said that to impress you,” Kiko admitted sheepishly, his bravado fading like a morning mist.

Elara felt a heavy weight in her heart. This was not the grand promise she had imagined. She had let herself be swept away by Kiko’s words, believing in his tall tales without seeing the truth.

From that moment on, Elara decided to be wiser. She learned to trust what she could see, not just what she was told. Sitting beside her tiny meal, she felt a new strength blossoming within her—a strength built on honesty and trust, ready to soar into the sky again, searching for a true companion who could truly match her spirit.
