The Dream of Akbar

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

One sunny morning in a dazzling palace, Emperor Akbar strode into the royal court looking as pale as a cloud. His twinkling eyes were now filled with worry. “Oh dear!” he exclaimed, plopping down on his grand throne. “I had a terrible dream! All my teeth fell out, except for one lonely tooth!” GASP! The courtiers gasped and stared wide-eyed, their hearts pounding like drums. What could such a dream mean?

In no time, Akbar summoned the kingdom’s wisest astrologers—twelve men with flowing beards and swirling robes. They rushed in, muttering like a buzzing beehive. After much shaking of heads and scratching of beards, they finally spoke, their voices trembling. “Your Majesty,” they warned, “this dream means doom! It foretells that you will outlive all your relatives, left alone and sad in the empty palace!”

With a roar like thunder, Akbar shouted, “GET OUT!” The astrologers fled, tripping over their robes in a flurry of panic, like leaves caught in a wild storm.

Just then, Birbal, the emperor’s clever advisor, bounced into the court with a smile that could light up a dark night. Sensing the tension, he asked, “What troubles you, Your Majesty?” Akbar shared his dreadful dream and the astrologers' prophecy, his voice heavy with sadness.

Birbal listened with a twinkle in his eye, stroking his chin thoughtfully. “Your dream is a hidden treasure!” he revealed. “It means you will live longer than all your relatives, becoming their brave guardian!”

Akbar’s face brightened, like the sun breaking through clouds. “Birbal!” he cried, joy sparkling in his voice. “You’ve turned my nightmare into a wonderful blessing! You are worth more than a thousand astrologers!”

From that day on, Akbar learned the magic of words, realizing they could turn fear into hope, and sadness into joy.
