The Treasure of the Blue Mosque

Arabian Nights Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wonder, magic, and timeless wisdom.

In the lively city of Baghdad, there lived a gentle man named Hassan. His little house was old and crumbling, with only a fig tree and a dry fountain in his yard. Every morning, as the bright sun painted the sky orange and pink, Hassan shared his last piece of bread with the cheerful sparrows that perched on his windowsill. They were his only friends in a world that felt lonely.

One magical night, as the stars twinkled like diamonds, a glowing figure appeared in Hassan's dream. With eyes that sparkled like precious gems, the figure whispered, “Hassan, a great treasure is buried beneath the fountain of the blue mosque in Cairo. Go find it!” For three nights, the same dream visited him, filling his heart with excitement and wonder. But Hassan had never traveled to Cairo and was scared of the long journey ahead.

After the third night, filled with bravery, Hassan sold his beloved fig tree, stuffed his small savings into his worn-out boot, and set off on his quest. The sun beat down on him, and the hot sand burned his feet, but he pressed on through wild deserts and rocky mountains. He faced howling sandstorms that whipped around him and even encountered tricky bandits who tried to steal his sandals! But Hassan had hidden his money safely around his waist.

Finally, after four long months, Hassan arrived in Cairo, tired and sunburned. As he leaned against the grand blue mosque, a loud crash jolted him awake! Police officers grabbed him, thinking he was a thief. The captain, a big man with a booming voice, asked, “Who are you?” Trembling, Hassan told them about his dream and the treasure. To his shock, the captain laughed. “I’ve had the same dream! A treasure under a fountain in a ruined house in Baghdad!”

Hassan's heart raced as the captain described his very own home! Without wasting a second, he hurried back to Baghdad, excitement bubbling inside him. He grabbed a shovel and raced to his yard. With each scoop of dirt, his heart pounded. Then, CLANK! His shovel hit something hard. Could it be? He dug faster and faster until his eyes widened—he uncovered a treasure chest!

Inside sparkled gold coins and dazzling jewels, treasures he had never even imagined. Joy filled his heart as he fixed his fountain, rebuilt his home, and shared his newfound wealth with his neighbors, ensuring they all had enough to eat and warm places to sleep. Hassan learned that sometimes, the greatest treasures are hidden right under our feet, just waiting for us to discover them.
