The Donkey and the Lion

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a vibrant jungle filled with singing birds and blooming flowers, there lived a proud lion named Karalakesara. But oh no! He was not feeling well at all. After a big tussle with a giant elephant, he was scratched and weak, with his golden fur dulled and his belly growling like thunder. His clever friend, Jinx the jackal, was also feeling quite miserable.

“I can’t bear this hunger any longer!” Karalakesara grumbled. “You must find me something to eat, Jinx!”

With a twinkle of mischief in his eyes, Jinx scampered off to a nearby village. There, he discovered a sad little donkey munching on the last bits of dry grass. The donkey looked tired and droopy, and Jinx couldn’t help but smile. “Oh, dear Uncle Donkey! You must be so tired! Come with me to a magical place in the jungle where the grass is green like jewels and the water is cool and sweet. No one will ever boss you around again!”

The donkey’s ears perked up. Adventure sounded wonderful! He decided to follow Jinx into the jungle. But as they reached the lion’s den, a powerful ROAR echoed through the trees! Karalakesara, weak but still fierce, lunged forward. However, he slipped in the soft earth and tumbled sideways with a loud crash!

Startled, the donkey dashed away, racing back to the village. “Wait, Uncle! You misunderstood!” Jinx called out, panting as he ran after the donkey. “That wasn't a scary lion; it was just a friendly lion who got a bit too excited!”

Now, the donkey wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. After thinking for a moment, he followed Jinx back to the jungle. This time, Karalakesara managed to catch him! WHOMP! The poor donkey was in big trouble.

Later, while Karalakesara splashed in the river, he asked Jinx to guard their meal. But the little jackal, too tempted by the tasty treat, gobbled up the donkey’s brain in a flash! When Karalakesara returned, his eyes narrowed in confusion. “Jinx, where is our meal’s brain?”

With a sly grin, Jinx replied, “Master, this donkey must not have had a brain at all! If he did, he would have never come back!”

Karalakesara pondered this and, realizing the truth, nodded. The jungle echoed with the laughter of animals, a reminder of the importance of being cautious and wise when tempted by sweet words.
