The Lion and the Donkey

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a bright and cheerful morning in a magical forest, the magnificent Lion strutted along his path, his golden mane shimmering like rays of sunshine. With each graceful step, the little creatures of the forest stepped aside, whispering in awe. The Rabbit bowed deeply, the graceful Deer tiptoed quietly away, and even the clever Fox, always planning his next trick, nodded his head in respect as the great King of Beasts sauntered by.

But suddenly, a loud and silly sound echoed through the trees—“Hee-haw! Hee-haw!” It was Donkey, and he had decided to bray right at Lion! “Is this the mighty king?” he cackled, tossing his head. “I’ve heard louder sounds from my cart!”

The forest fell silent. The chirping birds froze mid-song, and even the breeze seemed to stop, holding its breath in shock. Rabbit’s eyes widened, and Fox, curious and sly as ever, peeked from behind a tree to see what would happen next.

Lion paused, his great golden head slowly turning towards Donkey. Everyone anticipated a mighty roar, but instead, Lion simply continued on his way, as if Donkey had vanished into thin air. Donkey blinked in surprise, his bravado fading.

Rabbit scampered after Lion, his small feet pattering on the soft grass. “Your Majesty,” he whispered, concern in his voice, “aren’t you upset? He insulted you!” Lion walked on, his mane flowing like a golden river. “I don’t need to respond to every silly noise,” he replied softly. “If I stop for every braying fool, I lower myself to their level.”

As Lion continued down the path, his dignity remained untarnished, while Donkey stood alone, realizing that his foolish words had done nothing but make him feel small. In the heart of the enchanted forest, the animals understood that sometimes, the best choice is to let the noise fade away without a single glance.
