The Donkey Who Wanted to Sing

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

Once upon a time, in a sunny village, there lived a friendly washerman named Dhavalaka and his hardworking donkey named Uddhata. Each day, under the blazing sun, Uddhata carried heavy bundles of laundry, his legs tired and his back sore. But when the sun dipped below the horizon and the stars twinkled, a magical adventure awaited him!

At night, Uddhata was free to roam. One evening, he discovered a secret treasure just beyond the fence—a sprawling farm filled with the juiciest carrots and crunchy cabbages! Every night, while farmers snored, Uddhata would sneak in and enjoy the delightful feast, his tummy rumbling with joy.

One starry night, as Uddhata munched on delicious veggies, he met a sly jackal named Jala. “Hello, friend! You look like a treasure hunter!” Jala grinned. They quickly became partners: Uddhata would break through the fence with his strong legs, and Jala would sneak in right after him. Together, they savored their moonlit snacks, giggling and munching away.

But on a magical full moon night, everything changed! The moon glowed like a silver coin, and Uddhata felt a happy song bubbling inside him. “I want to sing!” he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling.

“Oh no, Uddhata!” Jala shouted, panic spreading across his face. “We’re not singers; we’re snack thieves! Your singing will wake the farmers!” But Uddhata, filled with joy, tossed his head and said, “I shall sing!”

Taking a deep breath, he opened his mouth wide and let out a loud, echoing “HEE-HAWWWW!” The sound shattered the peaceful night, sending the farmers rushing out of their cozy homes with torches and sticks.

Uddhata's heart raced as the angry farmers spotted him! WHACK! THWACK! SMACK! They chased him away, and soon, they tied a heavy wooden mortar around his neck. Jala watched from the fence, shaking his head with a smirk.

With a heavy heart and an even heavier neck, Uddhata limped home in silence, realizing that sometimes it’s best to enjoy the quiet moments, even when the world is full of delicious treats.
