The Donkey and the Lapdog

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a sunny yard filled with flowers and laughter, there lived a strong and hardworking donkey named Benny. Benny was not just any donkey; he carried heavy sacks, pulled wagons, and worked tirelessly under the golden sun. Meanwhile, inside the cozy house, a tiny, fluffy lapdog named Pippin basked in comfort. Pippin lounged on soft cushions, munched on tasty treats, and was adored by everyone with joyful hugs and laughter. Benny watched with big, envious eyes. “Oh, how I wish I could be like Pippin!” he thought, his ears flopping with frustration. “He does nothing and gets all the love!”

One warm and adventurous afternoon, Benny felt a spark of mischief. “Today, I will impress everyone!” he declared. With a mighty huff, he marched into the house, his hooves clopping loudly on the wooden floor. The family gasped in surprise, and then they erupted into giggles. Benny, wanting to show off like Pippin, kicked up his heels and tried to leap into his master’s lap. But what a clumsy sight it was! Chairs toppled over, dishes flew like magical plates in a circus, and juice splashed everywhere like a colorful waterfall!

The children squealed in a mix of laughter and shock, while the master tumbled backward onto the soft rug. Chaos filled the room, and Benny stood in the middle, heart racing with excitement and worry. Suddenly, the servants rushed in, waving brooms and shouting, “Out, out, big fellow!” Benny’s ears drooped, and he shuffled outside, feeling dusty and embarrassed. Pippin peeked through the doorway, barking with delight, as if to say, “Some things are just not meant for big creatures like you!”

As Benny stood in the yard, he realized that trying to be like someone else hadn’t brought him happiness, just a big mess. He looked back at Pippin, bouncing joyfully around the house, and understood that being a strong and dependable donkey was special in its own way. With a light heart, he shook off the dust and returned to his work, proud of who he truly was. From that day on, Benny carried his burdens with joy, and Pippin continued to prance and play, each creature knowing they were perfect just the way they were.
