The Donkey in the Tiger's Skin

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a busy little village, there lived a kind but poor washerman named Shuddapatta and his skinny donkey named Dumpling. Dumpling worked hard every day, carrying heavy bundles of freshly washed clothes. But oh, how he wished for more to eat! His once bright eyes were now dull and tired.

One sunny afternoon, while exploring the jungle, Shuddapatta stumbled upon a great surprise—a sleeping tiger! An idea sparked in his mind like a magical firework. He carefully peeled off the tiger's magnificent striped skin and wrapped it around Dumpling. "Tonight, you'll be a fierce tiger!" he laughed, feeling quite clever.

That night, with the moon glowing like a silver coin, Dumpling wandered into the fields, his heart beating fast with excitement. As he munched on sweet golden barley, the farmers spotted him and shouted, "TIGER! TIIIIIGER!" Doors slammed shut, and windows were bolted tight. Dumpling, thinking he had pulled off the greatest trick, gobbled up the tastiest treats, growing strong and happy.

Days passed, and Dumpling's life was a feast! But one starry night, he heard a gentle sound that made his heart flutter—a lady donkey calling out in the distance. Forgetting his tiger disguise, Dumpling brayed loudly, “HEE-HAWWWW!”

Suddenly, the farmers peeked out from their windows, their faces filled with surprise. “That’s no tiger!” they cried. Panic filled the air as they rushed out, armed with sticks and stones, ready to chase the “tiger.” Dumpling’s heart raced as he dashed through the fields, but the farmers were fast and furious!

Just when he thought he could escape, they caught up with him! Dumpling, bruised and scared, ran back towards Shuddapatta’s home, leaving the tiger skin behind. Gasping and limping, he realized that pretending to be someone else had led him into big trouble.

Back home, Dumpling looked up at the twinkling stars and felt a warm glow inside. He was just a donkey, and that was just wonderful! With a happy heart, he embraced who he truly was, grateful for the simple joys in life.
