The Dog and His Reflection

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a sunny village by the sparkling sea, there lived a big, fluffy Dog named Max. Max had a tail that wagged like a flag in the breeze and a nose that could sniff out treats from miles away! But there was one thing that made Max a little tricky—he was very greedy. Whenever he saw something tasty, he couldn’t help but gobble it up in a flash!

One bright morning, as the sun danced on the waves like a thousand tiny stars, Max trotted along the sandy shore. The tide had pulled back, revealing shiny stones and colorful shells glittering in the wet sand. Suddenly, something white and round caught his eye, peeking out from behind a cluster of seaweed. “Ooh! What’s that?” he thought, his tummy growling like a thunderstorm. It looked like a giant, delicious egg just calling his name!

Without a second thought, Max lunged forward and chomped down hard, but oh no! Instead of a soft, yummy egg, he found himself choking on a hard, prickly oyster shell! “Yowch!” he yelped, hopping around like a puppy on hot coals. The pain scratched his throat and made him dance in circles, confusion swirling in his mind. “Why did I do that?” he wondered, his heart racing.

As he stumbled along the shore, Max thought of all the wonderful breakfasts he could’ve enjoyed if only he had paused to take a sniff. After a while, the pain eased, and he curled up on a warm patch of sand, feeling a little sad. He watched the waves crash and swirl, each splash whispering a reminder of his mistake.

From that day on, Max learned to be more careful. He still loved food, yes indeed! But now, whenever he saw something that looked tasty, he took a moment to sniff and explore first. With each thoughtful nibble, he discovered new flavors and delights. Happy and wiser, Max trotted home with a wagging tail, grateful for his newfound patience and the delicious adventures still ahead.
