The Cleverness of Birbal

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a sparkling kingdom full of wonders, there lived a clever man named Birbal, who served the great Emperor Akbar. But not everyone was thrilled about Birbal's brilliance. Hussain Khan, the Emperor's jealous brother-in-law, wished he could outsmart Birbal and take his special place. One sunny morning, the Emperor called for both men, announcing, "Birbal and Hussain Khan, I have a vital mission for you!" He handed them a mysterious sealed letter to deliver to the King of Burma.

Eager for adventure, the two set off, traveling through lush green forests where birds sang sweet songs, crossing shimmering rivers that sparkled like diamonds, and climbing tall mountains that kissed the sky. After days of exploration, they arrived at the majestic palace of the King of Burma, only to find stern guards and an uneasy welcome. They were taken to a dark guest palace, where a kind minister delivered shocking news: the letter contained a dreadful command—they were to be hanged on the night of the full moon!

Hussain Khan turned as white as a ghost. "We’re going to DIE, Birbal!" he cried, trembling. But Birbal, calm as a cool breeze, had a clever plan. "When they bring us to the gallows, you must ask to be hanged first. Trust me!"

The night of the full moon arrived, casting a silvery light over everything. As they stood at the gallows, ropes swaying like sleepy vines, Birbal boldly declared, "Your Majesty! Let ME go first! I delivered the letter!"

"No, no!" Hussain Khan exclaimed, surprising himself. "I should go first! I’m the Emperor's brother-in-law!"

Puzzled, the King raised an eyebrow. "Why do you both want to die first?"

Grinning, Birbal replied, "In our land, the one who hangs first under this full moon will be reborn as the next King of Burma!"

The King's eyes widened in disbelief. He glanced nervously at his young son and quickly decided. In no time at all, Birbal and Hussain Khan found themselves back home, laden with beautiful gifts from the grateful King, who wouldn’t let anyone snatch away his son's future throne—even in another life!

As they returned to their kingdom, they realized that with a little cleverness, even the trickiest situations could turn into delightful adventures.
