The Tale of the Fisherman and the Genie

Arabian Nights Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wonder, magic, and timeless wisdom.

Once upon a time, in the magical kingdom of Damascus, there lived a brave young prince named Syed. He was tall and dashing, known for his daring adventures and a twinkle of mischief in his eyes. His father, the king, often worried about his escapades. “Be careful, my boy!” he would say, but Syed would just grin and dash off to seek excitement.

One day, while sailing on a grand ship through the sparkling sea, a terrible storm struck! The sky turned gray, and wild waves crashed like thunder. Suddenly, Syed was thrown overboard! He fought the waves bravely, but when the storm calmed, he found himself washed up on a mysterious, deserted island.

As night fell, Syed fell into a deep sleep. In his dreams, a wise old man with a shimmering silver beard whispered, “Find the statue on this island, break its head, and your way home will appear.” With the dawn’s light, Syed jumped up, determined to search.

He explored the island until he discovered a stone statue hidden beneath a twisted tree. With a mighty swing of a rock, he smashed the statue’s head—CRACK! Instantly, a tiny boat and a shining oar appeared by the riverbank. Syed hopped into the boat and paddled through glittering caves until he found a secret chamber. There sat a young man named Imtiaz, who looked lonely and sad.

“I’ve been hidden here to protect me from a wicked sorcerer’s curse!” he explained. Syed decided to keep his identity a secret, introducing himself as Moshin, a wandering sailor. The boys became fast friends, laughing and exploring the island together.

But one day, while climbing a tall coconut tree, a huge coconut fell and struck Imtiaz on the head! Syed rushed to his friend, his heart racing. He had only wanted to have fun, but the sorcerer’s curse seemed to come true.

As he held his friend close, tears in his eyes, Syed realized that even though fate had been cruel, the joy they shared would always shine bright in his heart. In the face of sadness, kindness blossomed like a flower in the desert, reminding him of the wonderful friendship they had built.
