The Riddles of Suri

Vikram & Betaal Tales

A spine-tingling Vikram and Betaal riddle — where a brave king must answer or lose everything!

The wind played a soft tune through the ancient mango trees, their leaves whispering secrets. In the midst of this enchanted night, Vikram strode forward, excited to hear Betaal’s tale. “Let me tell you about a clever young man named Suri,” began Betaal, his voice twinkling like fireflies. Suri had a wonderful talent for puzzles and riddles that could make anyone’s head spin!

One bright morning, Suri decided to dress up as a wrinkled old man and sneak into the grand palace, claiming to be a long-lost cousin of the king. “I’m a treasure chest of riddles!” he announced, his eyes sparkling with mischief. The king, intrigued, listened closely as Suri spoke in playful riddles that made everyone chuckle and scratch their heads. “My eyesight has gone on an adventure, and I need a walking stick to help me!” The king was so charmed that he quickly made Suri his advisor.

But one dark and chilly night, Suri heard a soft sobbing that sent shivers down his spine. When he peeked outside, he gasped at the sight of Goddess Lakshmi, her tears shining like diamonds. “I must leave,” she said gently. “Poverty seeks to take my place, and your kingdom will fall into sadness.” Suri, desperate to help, asked, “What can we do?” The goddess whispered that one brave soul must make a great sacrifice to save the kingdom.

Unbeknownst to Suri, the king had been listening from the shadows, his heart pounding. Suri rushed home, revealing the goddess’s message to his family, and they all quickly went to the temple. In the flickering candlelight, Suri made a heartbreaking choice, offering his son, then his daughter, and finally his beloved wife. Each sacrifice was filled with love and sadness.

Suddenly, the king stepped forward, overwhelmed. He couldn’t bear to watch their bravery alone. In a brave moment, he offered himself as well, vanishing into the night like a shooting star. As the moon rose, the air shimmered with magic, and the kingdom felt a warm glow of hope.

The night sky sparkled with stars, reminding everyone that the most extraordinary acts of goodness often come from the heart, shining brightly like a beacon in the darkness.
