The Crows and the Owls

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a vibrant green forest, the crows perched high in the grand Banyan tree while the wise owls nestled in their cool mountain caves. For ages, these two groups had been locked in a fierce feud, and nobody could remember how it all started. By night, the owls swooped down like dark shadows, causing chaos among the crows. With sparkling feathers caught in the wind and nests reduced to ashes, the crows felt defeated.

One starry night, the brave crow king, Meghavarana, gathered his worried ministers for an urgent meeting. “We need a clever plan!” he exclaimed, his voice trembling. As ideas flew around—making peace, fighting harder, or retreating—none seemed good enough. Then, Sthirajeevi, an old crow with a silver beak, spoke up with a twinkle in his eye. “I have a daring idea!”

The other crows perked up in curiosity. “What is it?” they asked, hearts racing. Sthirajeevi shared his risky scheme: “I will pretend to be a traitor! You must throw me from the tree, and the owls will think I’ve been exiled. They’ll welcome me into their cave.” The crows shivered at the thought of him alone with the owls, but Sthirajeevi’s calmness reassured them.

With a deep breath, they followed his plan, and soon Sthirajeevi was tossed from the tree, looking sad and wounded. The owls, watching from the shadows, couldn’t resist. “A friend of our enemy is a friend of ours!” they hooted, welcoming him into their cave.

For weeks, Sthirajeevi pretended to be loyal while secretly gathering twigs for a plan of his own. One moonlit night, when his pile of branches grew tall, he knew it was time. He flew back to the Banyan tree, calling, “Bring burning branches! Hurry!”

With their hearts pounding, the crows swooped to the cave, setting the pile ablaze. CRACKLE! ROAR! Flames leaped high into the sky, lighting up the night. The owls, startled and fluffed, found themselves trapped as the cave filled with smoke.

With the danger gone, the crows returned to their beloved Banyan tree, their hearts bursting with joy. Sthirajeevi, the clever crow, was hailed a hero! The crows sang songs of his bravery and wisdom, knowing that sometimes, cleverness and patience can outshine brute strength in the fiercest of battles.
