The Crow and the Pitcher

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

On the hottest day of the year, the sun blazed fiercely in the sky, turning the world into a dry, cracked desert. The Crow flapped her wings desperately, feeling her throat as parched as the earth below. She soared high above the empty ponds and vanished streams, her heart sinking with every beat. Just when despair began to creep in, a glimmer of hope sparkled in the distance.

Curious, the Crow swooped down to investigate. There, beside an old, crumbling wall, stood a weathered clay pitcher. Her heart raced with excitement as she peered inside. “Yes!” she chirped, spotting water shimmering like a treasure at the bottom. But as she stretched her neck and tilted her beak, she realized the water was too far below. Frustration bubbled up inside her, but the clever Crow wouldn’t give up!

Her eyes darted around, spotting small pebbles scattered like forgotten gems. An idea sparked in her mind! “I can use these!” With determination, she grabbed a pebble and soared high, feeling the breeze ruffle her feathers. “Plink!” The pebble splashed into the pitcher, and to her delight, the water rose just a little! Hope danced in her heart.

One by one, she dropped pebbles into the pitcher, each joyful “Plink! Plink! Plink!” echoing like a magical song. Curious animals gathered to watch. A squirrel tilted his head, a wise turtle blinked in surprise, and some rabbits hopped over, their ears twitching with excitement. “What are you doing?” asked the squirrel.

“I’m reaching the water!” the Crow replied, her beak still busy. The animals gasped as the water climbed higher and higher, inching toward the top.

Finally, as the sun dipped low in the sky, the water reached the rim! The Crow couldn’t contain her joy. She dipped her beak into the cool, refreshing water, savoring the sweetest drink she had ever tasted. Feeling proud and energized, she spread her wings wide and soared into the sky, her heart filled with happiness. The other animals cheered, clapping and hopping with delight.

That day, the Crow learned that with patience and cleverness, even the biggest challenges could be solved, leading to the sweetest of victories.
