The Crane and the Crab

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

In a magical land of dancing trees and sparkling streams, there lived a graceful crane named Cora by a little pond. She loved to feast on the plump fish that shimmered in the water. But one hot summer, the rain stopped falling, and the pond began to shrink. Cora watched, her belly rumbling with hunger as the fish swam closer together.

One sunny morning, with the sky painted in colors of orange and pink, Cora sat at the edge of the pond, looking very sad. Curious little fish poked their heads up and asked, “Oh, dear Cora! What troubles you?” With a heavy sigh, she said, “Our pond is drying up! Soon, there won’t be any water left, and you will all be in trouble!”

The fish gasped, their tiny fins fluttering with fear. “What can we do?” they asked. A sly smile spread across Cora's beak. “If you trust me, I can take you one by one to a magical pond where the water sparkles!”

Though hesitant, a brave little fish named Finn said, “I’ll go first!” With a flap of her wings, Cora swooped him up and flew high above the trees to a shimmering pond. “It’s beautiful!” Finn exclaimed, and soon the other fish were eagerly lining up for their turn.

One by one, Cora carried the fish away, but—CRUNCH! With a quick snap, she gobbled each fish up when they arrived at the shady tree. Soon, only a wise old crab named Crabby remained.

When Cora offered him a ride, he squinted at her suspiciously. “I’ll hold on tight!” he declared, wrapping his legs around her neck. Cora flew up, but clever Crabby spotted the pile of bones beneath the tree. “Aha! You’ve tricked them!” he shouted, tightening his grip.

Cora begged, but Crabby was no fool. With a snap, he let go, and down flew Cora, landing softly on the ground. Crabby scuttled to the beautiful pond, swimming happily among the lotus flowers, while the breeze whispered tales of wisdom through the leaves.

From that day forth, everyone learned a valuable lesson about trust, cleverness, and the importance of being wise to a trickster’s games.

The Moral of the Story
