The Cock and the Fox

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a bright and bustling farmyard, there lived a proud Cock with feathers that shimmered like jewels in the sun. Every morning, he would perch high on the fence and announce the dawn with a cheerful "Cock-a-doodle-doo!" All the animals admired his confidence, but little did they know that adventure and trouble were waiting just around the corner.

One sunny morning, as the Cock was showing off his crowing, he spotted a flash of movement in the bushes. Curiosity piqued, he hopped closer to investigate. To his surprise, a sly Fox was caught in a trap, his sleek body tangled in ropes. The Fox struggled and strained, but the more he fought, the tighter the trap held him.

"Well, well, dear Fox! You seem to be in quite a pickle!" the Cock chuckled, a hint of mischief in his voice. The Fox, with a glint in his eye, replied sweetly, “Oh, kind Cock, please help me! If you keep my little secret and don’t tell the farmer, I promise I won’t bother you anymore.” The Cock thought for a moment; he had heard many tales of the cunning Fox’s tricks.

“I won’t tell the farmer with words,” the Cock replied, his feathers ruffling with excitement. Just then, the farmer strolled into the yard, whistling a merry tune. The clever Cock seized the moment. With a mighty flap of his wings, he crowed louder than ever, "Cock-a-doodle-doo! Cock-a-doodle-doo!"

The Fox's eyes widened in horror as the farmer rushed over, stick in hand. “A Fox caught in my trap?” the farmer exclaimed, bewildered. “But you promised!” the Fox cried, panic rising in his voice.

“Oh, I didn’t use words!” said the Cock, puffing his chest proudly. “I used my crow to share the news!”

With the Fox trapped and the farmer pleased, the animals cheered for their clever Cock. He soared high into the sky, full of joy, knowing that a little cleverness can outsmart even the trickiest of foes. From that day on, the proud Cock continued to greet each morning with his cheerful song, reminding everyone that sometimes, being smart is just as important as being brave.
