In a cheerful village surrounded by blooming flowers, there lived a kind Brahmin named Ravi and his sweet wife, Sandhill. Their little hut was cozy, with a roof that looked like a hat on a sunny day. One bright morning, Ravi beamed with excitement. “Tomorrow’s the big festival! I’ll go to the city to gather food. You must invite a friend to share a meal with you!”
“Oh dear Ravi,” Sandhill sighed, glancing at their tiny cupboard. “All I have are some little sesame seeds!”
“Cook those seeds with love!” Ravi smiled. “A small meal can bring great joy!” Filled with determination, Sandhill set to work. She cleaned the seeds, humming happy tunes, imagining the smiles of her guests. Hours passed as she made the seeds shine brightly like golden stars. She spread them in the warm sunshine, feeling proud.
Suddenly, a scruffy stray dog wandered into the yard, sniffing around. When Sandhill stepped inside for a moment, the muddy mischief-maker dashed right into her seeds! A gasp escaped her lips as she saw the mess! “Oh no! What can I do?”
Just then, a twinkle of an idea danced in her mind. Her neighbor had a big sack of un-husked seeds! “I can trade!” she thought. With a bright smile, she marched next door. “Good day! Look at my beautiful seeds! Shall we trade for some of yours?”
Her neighbor’s eyes sparkled with delight, but just then, her clever son, Arjun, stepped in. “Mother, why trade clean seeds for dirty ones? Something must be wrong!”
Sandhill’s cheeks turned cherry red. The neighbor agreed, “Thank you, but I think I’ll keep my seeds.” Heart heavy, Sandhill returned home, realizing that she had almost let her eagerness cloud her honesty.
As the sun dipped low, she resolved to celebrate the festival with her husband, filled with love and true generosity, knowing that shining brightly in honesty always leads to the best joy.
