The Fox and the Grapes

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

On a bright sunny day, high on a rocky ridge, two powerful creatures, Bear and Lion, spotted a fluffy little goat munching on the sweetest grass. With their mouths watering, they prepared to pounce, but a hush fell over the land. "It's mine!" growled Bear, claws gleaming in the sunlight. “Not a chance! It’s mine!” roared Lion, his golden mane shimmering like the sun.

The little goat gasped and dashed into a nearby thicket, heart racing like a drum. But Bear and Lion were too busy puffing up their chests to notice. They were filled with pride and wouldn’t back down. With a mighty roar, Bear lunged forward, while Lion leaped back, displaying his sharp teeth. The two friends turned foes clashed in a swirling storm of fur and growls, tumbling down the rocky ridge. Dust flew like magic sparkles, and pebbles scattered everywhere as they wrestled.

As the sun climbed higher, both Bear and Lion grew tired. Their mighty roars turned into weary grumbles, and they collapsed on opposite sides of the ridge, panting heavily. Meanwhile, the little goat shivered beneath a thornbush, eyes wide with worry. Suddenly, a clever Fox peeked out from behind a rock, his eyes twinkling with mischief.

“Good afternoon, brave warriors!” he called playfully. Bear and Lion could hardly lift their heads; they were too exhausted to respond. With a sly grin, Fox approached the trembling goat, gently coaxing it out from hiding. He tucked the little creature under his foreleg and began to trot away down the hill.

Bear and Lion watched in disbelief, mouths agape. “Is he... taking the goat?” Bear wheezed in shock. “Yes!” Lion huffed, frustration bubbling up. “And we did all the fighting!”

With a cheeky flick of his tail, Fox glanced back and chuckled, “While you were busy battling each other, I simply gathered what you left behind!”

As Bear and Lion lay in the dust, they finally realized the truth. It wasn't the clever Fox's strength or the goat's speed that outsmarted them; it was their own stubbornness. They had wasted their energy fighting over something that wasn’t worth the trouble, while a wise friend had walked away with the prize.
