The Donkey and the Salt

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a lively marketplace filled with vibrant stalls and the sweet scent of fresh fruits, there lived a hardworking Donkey named Benny. Benny was no ordinary donkey; he had a big heart and strong legs that helped him carry heavy sacks for the Merchant. One sunny afternoon, Benny found himself loaded with sparkling white salt that glimmered like tiny stars under the sun.

As he trudged along the winding path to the river, Benny let out a long, tired sigh. The sun was blazing, and his heavy load felt like it was pulling him down. When he finally reached the river, Benny took a deep breath and carefully stepped onto the slippery stones. Suddenly, whoosh! His hooves slipped, and with a big splash, he tumbled into the cool, refreshing water!

As he shook off the water and stood up, Benny was amazed to find that the sacks were much lighter. The river had washed away most of the salt! With a joyful bray, he splashed back to shore and trotted home, feeling like the luckiest donkey in the world.

The next time Benny made the journey, he remembered his lucky splash. With a cheeky grin, he made sure no one was watching and took a running leap into the river again, giggling as he soaked himself. Once more, the salt melted away, and he felt as light as a feather!

But little did Benny know, the Merchant was watching closely. On Benny's third trip, the Merchant filled the sacks with dry sponges that looked just like the salt. Benny, oblivious to the trick, happily skipped to the river. He couldn't resist showing off and jumped right in, expecting the same lightness. But when he emerged, his heart sank! The sponges had soaked up the water and turned his load heavier than ever!

With each step, Benny felt like he was dragging a mountain. His legs trembled, and he panted as he slowly crossed the river, collapsing on the shore, exhausted. The Merchant approached with a knowing smile, and Benny realized that his tricks had backfired.

From that day on, Benny chose to carry his loads honestly and learned that cleverness meant being wise and understanding the world around him. He trotted back and forth between the river and the town, feeling proud of every honest step he took, forever remembering the lesson he learned through his adventures.
