The Clever Donkey

Arabian Nights Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wonder, magic, and timeless wisdom.

In a dazzling land of golden sands and sparkling oases, there lived a clever farmer named Abdul Qadir. He had a magical secret: he could understand the whispers of animals! This special gift was like a hidden treasure that he cherished. Among his friends were a strong bull who worked hard in the fields and a mischievous little donkey named Zaki, who loved to dream up crafty plans.

One sunny afternoon, Zaki sauntered up to the bull, who was sweating and panting under the blazing sun. “Oh, my dear friend,” Zaki said with a sly grin, “why do you toil so much? You’re like a king locked in a golden cage! Just pretend to be sick tomorrow, and Abdul will let you rest while I take the easy path to the market!” Little did Zaki know, Abdul was hiding nearby, a playful smile on his face as he overheard this sneaky plot.

When morning arrived, the bull groaned and pretended to sway as if he might fall over. “Oh no! My poor bull!” Abdul exclaimed, feigning worry. He unhitched the bull and hitched up the surprised Zaki instead. “Wait, what?!” Zaki gasped, but it was too late! The sun blazed brightly as Zaki plowed the fields from sunrise to sunset, dust swirling around him like a whirlwind. His little legs grew tired, while the bull rested happily in the shade, enjoying a gentle breeze.

Later that night, back in the stable, the bull chuckled, “How was your day, Zaki?” Zaki’s temper flared, but he quickly devised another plan. “Oh, dear bull! I overheard a butcher say he wants to sell you for meat!” The bull’s eyes widened in shock, and his heart raced. But instead of panicking, he stood tall, ready to work harder than ever.

The next day, Abdul chuckled to see the bull striding proudly in the field, realizing that true strength lay in hard work and honesty. As the sun set in a magical swirl of colors, Abdul patted Zaki’s nose, who learned that clever tricks can lead to surprising twists, and that the joy of friendship thrives best through hard work and sincerity.
