The Goats and the Log

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, after a magical night of rain, a lively mountain stream sparkled and danced over smooth, shiny rocks, twisting wildly between steep, mossy banks. Across the rushing water lay a narrow log, as smooth as a butterfly's wing after years of weathering. It was the only way to cross!

Two proud Goats approached the log from opposite sides. Grumble, with a coat as white as fresh snow, and Stomp, with a striking coat of midnight black, were both strong and sure they should be the first to cross. As they reached the middle of the log, the stream gurgled below, eager to watch the showdown.

“Back up, Grumble!” bleated the white Goat, his voice sharp like a bell. “I was here first!”

“Not a chance!” stomped Stomp defiantly. “You can’t just push me around!”

The log swayed gently beneath them, but neither Goat would budge. The water bubbled angrily below, warning them, yet their pride blinded them. Grumble lowered his head, ready to charge. “If you won’t let me by, I'll make you!”

“Try me!” shouted Stomp, lowering his own head.

In a foolish moment, both Goats lunged forward, crashing their horns together like thunder! The log trembled dangerously! Suddenly, with a loud creak, they lost their balance and, splashing wildly, tumbled into the swirling water below.

“Oh no!” cried Grumble, as the rushing stream swept them away. “What have we done?”

Later, when the sun shone bright and the stream flowed gently, two smaller Goats approached—Twirl, a lovely cream color, and Whirl, with golden spots. They looked at the log and quickly understood what the proud Goats had missed.

Twirl knelt down gently, forming a safe bridge. Whirl smiled and stepped carefully over Twirl’s back, as steady as a feather gliding on the breeze. Once safely across, they both giggled, feeling clever and happy.

As they looked back at the log, a warm breeze whispered through the trees, sharing a secret. The water now sparkled in the sunlight, and the two friends skipped away, grateful for their teamwork and the lesson learned.
