The Cat That Was Afraid of Milk

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

In the lively kingdom of Vijayanagara, a little problem had turned into a big adventure! Tiny, squeaky rats had taken over every nook and cranny. They were nibbling on the king's favorite hat, dancing in the kitchens, and hosting wild parties in the storehouses! With his majestic crown shimmering in the sun, the king proclaimed, “Every family must adopt a strong, well-fed cat!” Excitedly, families rushed to bring home furballs, and soon every kitty was enjoying rich, creamy milk from the royal cows.

All seemed peaceful, except for Tenali Raman's home, where his new cat was about to have an unexpected surprise. One sunny morning, Tenali poured a bowl of steaming milk. The moment the cat sniffed the sweet aroma, its eyes sparkled! It dashed toward the bowl, but when it took a gigantic lick, it let out a spine-chilling “MRRREEEOOOWWW!” The milk was scalding hot! With a wild leap, the poor kitty shot under the bed, trembling with fear at the sight of milk.

Days went by, and Tenali began drinking the milk himself, while the frightened cat grew thinner but became an extraordinary hunter. With fierce determination, it chased away the sneaky rats, catching them like a brave lion!

Then, the king announced a grand inspection where every household would showcase their cats to win a shiny prize. The day arrived, and the hall buzzed with excitement! Cats strutted in, all fluffy and plump, while Tenali’s cat shuffled in looking scrawny.

“TENALI!” boomed the king. “You have STARVED your cat!” With a calm smile, Tenali said, “Your Majesty, this cat simply doesn’t like milk. Would you like to see?” Curious, the king nodded. A golden bowl of warm milk was placed before the cat. The moment it saw the milk, its eyes widened! With a startled squeak, it darted under the king’s throne, sending three ministers spilling their drinks and causing the king's crown to tilt sideways! Laughter filled the courtroom like delightful music.

When the giggles faded, Tenali spoke up. “Your Majesty, look at how many pesky rats my brave cat has caught!” The king thought for a moment and realized that the lazy, well-fed cats had been snoozing away, while Tenali's skinny hero had cleared an entire neighborhood of pesky rats!

Impressed, the king awarded Tenali the shiny prize, and his cat was showered with delicious treats. As the other cats looked on, a bit embarrassed, Tenali's little hero sat tall and proud, knowing it had shown that sometimes, being hungry and having a purpose can lead to the greatest adventures!
