The Cat That Hated Milk

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

In the magnificent palace of King Krishnadevaraya, a funny problem was brewing. Tiny, sneaky rats were everywhere! They dashed across the shiny marble floors, nibbled on royal sweets, and even chewed up important scrolls. One cheeky little rat was so bold, it plopped right onto the king's dinner plate, wiggling its whiskers as if to say, “What are you going to do, oh mighty king?”

With a booming voice that echoed throughout the palace, King Krishnadevaraya declared, “Enough! Every home must have a cat! Strong, healthy, and well-fed cats!” Families rushed off to find furry companions, and soon the palace was filled with cats chasing away rats. The king was delighted! But then, those hungry cats cried out for milk. So, the generous king ordered every household to receive a cow!

In his cozy home, Tenali Raman adored his sleek little cat with bright, mischievous eyes. Each morning, he would boil fresh milk and place it in a shiny bowl. But one day, when the cat dashed in for a drink—SLURP!—it burnt its tongue! “MRRROOOOW!” it yowled, leaping into the air and racing out the door like a whirlwind.

Day after day, whenever Tenali set out the milk, the cat zoomed away, as if it were being chased by a dragon! Tenali shrugged and happily drank the delicious milk himself, while the cat became an expert rat-catcher, scaring all the rats away.

Then, excitement buzzed through the kingdom when the king announced a contest: “Bring your cats to court! I shall reward the owner of the healthiest cat!” Everyone brought their fluffy, plump cats, waddling into the court like furry balls of joy. But when Tenali’s cat appeared, everyone gasped. It looked like a scraggly piece of string!

The King frowned and pointed at Tenali. “What is this? Are you NOT feeding your cat?”

Tenali bowed and replied, “I serve it milk every day, Your Majesty.” The king was puzzled and ordered warm milk to be brought forth. But the moment the cat saw the milk, its eyes grew wide, and it dashed under the king's throne, hissing in fear!

“What is WRONG with this creature?!” thundered the king.

Calmly, Tenali explained, “The first time I gave it hot milk, it burnt its tongue! But just look at how well it catches rats!”

The king’s stern expression softened as he watched Tenali’s brave little cat, the true hero of the day. With a wave of his hand, he allowed Tenali and his clever cat to leave, a smile spreading across his face. Sometimes, the simplest answers are the most magical of all!
