The Crooked Neck of the Camel

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a lively kingdom in India, there lived a wise Emperor named Akbar and his clever friend, Birbal. One bright morning, after Birbal had entertained the court with his clever jokes, the Emperor excitedly promised him a basket bursting with marvelous gifts. The crowd cheered, and Birbal felt as light as a feather in the wind.

Days turned into weeks, but the gifts never came. Birbal kept his cool, yet inside he was bubbling like a pot of soup—BOIL, BOIL, BOIL! He decided it was time for a little mischief to remind the Emperor of his promise.

One sun-kissed afternoon, as they walked by the shimmering Yamuna River, a curious camel wandered by. Its long neck twisted and turned like a winding path. “Birbal,” Akbar said, scratching his chin, “why do you think that camel has such a crooked neck?”

With a twinkle in his eye, Birbal replied, “Your Majesty, I once read that anyone who breaks a promise gets a crooked neck in the next life.” His words danced in the air like butterflies, creating a moment of suspense. Akbar blinked, looking at Birbal, who seemed lost in thought, gazing at the camel as if it held the key to the universe.

The silence thickened like sweet honey. Finally, the Emperor whispered, “Birbal?”

“Yes, Your Majesty?” he answered, feigning innocence.

“You’ve made your point,” Akbar said, a grin spreading on his face. “The gifts will arrive tonight.”

Birbal’s eyes sparkled brighter than stars as he chuckled, “I hope that poor camel feels better soon!”

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the palace filled with the delightful sounds of laughter and jingling treasures. Chests of shimmering jewels and delicious sweets arrived, and the joy was palpable. Akbar beamed, his heart lightened by the colorful surprise.

From that day forward, the Emperor always remembered his promises, knowing that a clever friend like Birbal would always nudge him back on track. Their friendship grew stronger and wiser, just like the camel with its crooked neck.
