The Camel and the Monkey

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a golden savanna, where the sun kissed the earth, King Lion prepared for a dazzling feast beneath the grand baobab tree. All the animals gathered, their hearts beating with excitement. Everyone was eager to see the amazing Monkey, known far and wide for his spectacular dance moves. He sparkled under the sunlight as he leaped and twirled, his fur shining like stars, making the crowd erupt with cheers! Even King Lion thumped his mighty tail in joy!

Watching from the edge was a tall, lanky Camel, staring in awe. But soon, admiration turned to envy. “Why should that little Monkey get all the glory?” he grumbled, his long legs jittering with frustration. “I can dance too! Just watch!” With a determined huff, Camel marched into the clearing, neck held high. “Prepare for a real show!” he declared, his voice booming like distant thunder.

As the musicians began to play, Camel tried to dance. Oh, how he tried! But instead of elegance, his moves were more like a playful whirlwind. He stumbled and swayed, his legs flinging into the air as dust whirled around him. A startled rabbit jumped away, hiding under a bench as Camel kicked higher and twisted harder, desperate to impress.

Suddenly, with a massive leap, he landed so close to King Lion that the royal crown wobbled dangerously! A thick silence fell over the crowd, and then—ROAR!—King Lion’s voice shook the savanna like a clap of thunder. “Enough!” he boomed, sending Camel stumbling backward. The other animals hurriedly chased him away, their shouts ringing in his ears.

Left alone in the quiet of the desert, Camel panted heavily, feeling a heavy weight in his heart. But as the sun began to set, a gentle breeze whispered through the savanna, wrapping around him like a soft hug. In that magical moment, Camel realized he didn’t need to be like Monkey. He could find joy in his own special gifts.

From that day on, Camel practiced walking gracefully, discovering the beauty that lay within himself. As the sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, he smiled, knowing that each creature has its own magic waiting to shine.
