The Camel and the Jackal

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a lush, green jungle where the trees giggled in the breeze and the sun painted the world in gold, there lived a mighty lion named Madotkata. His mane sparkled like the morning sun, and his roar was as powerful as the rolling thunder. Alongside him were three loyal friends: a clever crow with feathers as dark as midnight, a cunning jackal with mischief dancing in his eyes, and a strong leopard who could leap like a lightning bolt.

One sunny afternoon, as they wandered through the jungle, they spotted a big, gentle camel looking lost and scared. “Fear not, dear camel! Stay with us, and you shall be safe!” Madotkata proclaimed with a warm smile. The camel's heart filled with joy, and he gratefully accepted the lion's kind offer.

Days turned into weeks filled with laughter and friendship, but one day, a wild elephant charged into their peaceful jungle, challenging Madotkata to a fierce duel. The ground shook as they battled, but when the dust settled, Madotkata lay weak and wounded. His friends watched in despair as hunger gnawed at their bellies.

With a glint of mischief, the jackal whispered to the crow, “We have a feast right here.” He slyly gestured toward the unsuspecting camel. “Let’s convince him to help!” The jackal approached Madotkata, his voice smooth like silk. “Oh noble king, the camel could offer himself to you — it would show great honor.”

Madotkata, weak and hungry, nodded slowly. The jackal gathered everyone under the trees. “Our king needs a true friend! Who will sacrifice for him?” The crow bravely offered himself, but the jackal dismissed him. The powerful leopard stepped forward, but the jackal waved him off too.

The gentle camel, seeing his friends eager to help, thought, They are my family! With a deep breath, he stepped forward, “Master, please — eat me. I wish to serve you!” The jackal cheered, “A noble sacrifice!” Madotkata, swayed by the words, accepted. In a swift, sorrowful moment, the jungle fell silent as the gentle camel’s heart stopped.

As the jungle returned to its stillness, the jackal and crow exchanged sly glances, while the leopard felt a heavy sadness. A warm spirit had been lost, a reminder that not all sweet words come from kind hearts.
