The Bundle of Sticks

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a bright and bustling village filled with sunshine and laughter, there lived an old farmer with three spirited sons. They were as different as the colors of a rainbow! The oldest son, strong and stubborn like a fierce bull, loved to argue. The middle son, quick as a lightning bolt, enjoyed teasing everyone. And the youngest, a daydreamer with twinkling eyes, often got lost in his own magical thoughts.

From dawn till dusk, their voices echoed through the air, causing the chickens to cluck nervously and the cows to look up with worried eyes. The old farmer tried everything to quiet the chaos, but his sons kept on bickering like a pack of playful puppies. One starry night, under a sky sparkling with stars, the farmer had a brilliant idea. He gathered his sons in the cozy barn, where the sweet smell of hay danced in the air.

“My dear boys,” he said, his voice soft yet firm, “I have a challenge for you!” He handed each of them a single, thin stick. “Break these!” With a snap, snap, and snap, the sticks shattered easily in their hands, leaving them puzzled. But the farmer pulled out a big, strong bundle of sticks, tightly tied together.

“Now, try to break this!” he said, a twinkle in his eyes. The oldest son, muscles bulging, pulled with all his might, but the bundle stood strong. The clever middle son stomped and slammed it, but it wouldn’t budge. Finally, the youngest son gave it a try, pushing and pulling with all his strength, yet the bundle remained unbroken, almost as if it had magical powers.

The old farmer smiled, his heart swelling with hope. “You see, my sons? Alone, you're as fragile as those single sticks. But together, you're as strong as this bundle!”

In that moment, a spark of understanding ignited between the brothers. They realized that if they worked together, they could achieve amazing things. From that day on, the farm buzzed with laughter and teamwork. The chickens clucked happily, the cows mooed cheerfully, and the once-noisy household transformed into a joyful home filled with love and harmony. As the sun set over the fields, painting the sky with hues of orange and gold, the brothers knew they had found the true magic of family.
