The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl

Legendary Tales

A legendary tale of heroes, gods, and quests that have echoed through the ages.

In a sparkling palace high above the world, a young goddess named Zhinu spent her days weaving magic at her loom. She crafted the sky with threads of golden sunshine, soft pink dawn, deep purple twilight, and dancing silver storms. But even with all her beautiful creations, Zhinu felt lonely in her heavenly home.

One bright morning, as Zhinu gazed down, she saw a young cowherd named Niulang walking his old ox beside a glimmering river. He whistled a cheerful tune, and his kind eyes twinkled like the stars. Zhinu’s heart fluttered with joy as she decided to float down to Earth. When they met by the river, laughter filled the air as the sun set, painting the sky with colors only Zhinu could create. That night, under the glowing stars, they fell in love, married, and welcomed two children into their flower-filled home.

But their happiness was soon interrupted! The fierce Goddess of Heaven discovered Zhinu's secret love. BOOM! Thunder rumbled as she rushed to the Earth, whirling her hand through the sky. With a swift motion, she scratched a fiery line that turned into the Milky Way, separating Zhinu from Niulang forever. Zhinu's heart sank as she wept, her tears darkening the clouds and raining upon the world below.

On the seventh day of the seventh month, a magical sight unfolded. Hundreds of magpies filled the sky, flying together to form a bridge of black and white feathers across the shimmering stars. Zhinu raced across the bridge while Niulang climbed the sparkling stars. For one magical night, they embraced, their hearts singing with joy, but dawn approached, and the magpies flew back, each left with a funny bald head!

From that day on, every seventh day of the seventh month, the brave magpies would fly again, reminding the world that love can build bridges, no matter how far apart we are.
