The Brahmin and His Dream

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a dusty little village, there lived a kind Brahmin named Swabhavakripna. He was as poor as a mouse without cheese! Every day, he wandered from house to house, hoping to find a few crumbs to nibble on. At night, he hung a round clay pot beside his bed, collecting bits of leftover food like a twinkling star in the moonlight.

One magical evening, a generous villager gifted him a gigantic pot full of warm, sweet rice porridge. It bubbled like a happy cauldron, filling the air with a delightful aroma! Swabhavakripna took a tiny spoonful and smiled wide, feeling joy burst in his heart. He poured the rest into his hanging pot and gazed at it lovingly, feeling like the richest man in the world.

That night, he drifted into a dream where a terrible famine swept through the land! But Swabhavakripna had a clever idea! He sold his magical pot of porridge for a dazzling one hundred silver coins! With those coins, he bought two playful goats. The goats soon had adorable kids, which he traded for sturdy buffaloes. Before he knew it, he had a grand house, a loving wife, and even a giggling baby boy named Soma Sharma!

But one sunny afternoon, little Soma made such a ruckus that Swabhavakripna grew frustrated. “THAT'S ENOUGH!” he yelled, swinging his foot in anger. CRASH! His foot smashed into the hanging pot, sending porridge flying everywhere! SPLAT!

When the mess cleared, everything was gone! The silver coins, the goats, the buffaloes, even his beautiful family vanished in an instant, leaving him alone in a puddle of cold porridge. Swabhavakripna sat there, realizing that all his dreams had crumbled, like crumbs in the wind, while the real treasures were right in front of him.
