The Brahmin and the Cobra

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

Once upon a time, in a sunlit village surrounded by lush green hills and rustling trees, there lived a kind-hearted farmer named Haridatta. He worked hard in his fields from morning till night, but his crops barely grew, and his family often went to bed with empty stomachs. One warm afternoon, feeling weary and worried, Haridatta rested beneath a grand old tree. As he closed his eyes, something shiny caught his attention.

From a nearby anthill, a magnificent cobra slithered out, its scales shimmering like dark jewels. Instead of feeling scared, Haridatta felt a flicker of hope. “Could this cobra be a guardian of my land?” he wondered. Excitedly, he hurried home and returned with a bowl of fresh, cool milk. Placing it before the anthill, he bowed. “Great guardian, I offer this as a sign of my respect.”

The next morning, Haridatta could hardly believe his eyes! The bowl was empty, and in its place lay a sparkling gold coin! Every day after that, with his heart brimming with gratitude, he offered milk and found a new coin waiting for him. His farm flourished, and his family thrived.

But one day, Haridatta had to travel far away, so he asked his son to continue the offerings. At first, the boy was excited, but soon a greedy thought crept in. “Why wait for one coin when I can have them all?” His heart raced as he grabbed a stick, waiting for the cobra to appear.

When the cobra emerged, the boy swung the stick, but the clever cobra dodged and bit him! Within hours, the boy was gone, leaving only silence behind. When Haridatta returned, he was heartbroken. He wept for his son, tears flowing like rain on thirsty soil.

Approaching the anthill, the cobra appeared, its eyes filled with sorrow. “Your son attacked me for treasure. The trust we shared is broken.” The cobra gifted him a sparkling diamond as a parting gift. “Take this and go, for what was lost cannot be restored.”

With a heavy heart, Haridatta accepted the diamond, a bittersweet reminder of his loss. He returned home, knowing that what truly mattered was respect and love. From that day on, Haridatta tended to his farm with kindness, forever remembering the lesson life had taught him.
