The Greedy Hand

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a cozy little cottage nestled between two towering trees, lived a cheerful boy named Thomas. With twinkling blue eyes and a smile that sparkled like stars, he brought joy wherever he went. But Thomas had a tiny problem—his hand was a little too greedy!

One sunny afternoon, Thomas’s mother placed a magical pitcher on the kitchen table. It wasn’t just any pitcher; it glittered in the light, filled with the most scrumptious surprise—smooth, shiny filberts! They looked like tiny treasures just waiting to be discovered. “You can have some, Thomas,” his mother said warmly, and his heart raced with excitement!

With a leap, Thomas dashed to the table, his hands itching to grab the delightful nuts. But instead of taking a few, he wanted to gather as many as he could! With a big grin, he stuffed his hand deep into the pitcher, squeezing the nuts tightly. “I want them all!” he thought, his ambition soaring like a kite in the wind.

But suddenly, Thomas felt a jolt of panic. His hand was stuck! The pitcher rattled like a bird trapped in a cage as he twisted and turned, trying to pull it free. “Oh no!” he gasped, a wave of worry washing over him. Just then, his mother entered, eyes wide with surprise. There stood Thomas, trapped and sniffling, his hand caught in the shimmering pitcher.

“Thomas, sweetheart, let go of some of the nuts,” she said softly, her voice like a gentle breeze. “But then I’ll have less!” he whined, his heart sinking. “Yes, but you’ll be free!” Thomas felt torn between his love for the tasty nuts and the desire to escape.

Taking a deep breath, he slowly opened his fingers. One by one, the filberts tumbled back, like little brown raindrops falling from the sky. As soon as his hand was free, Thomas looked at the few nuts still in his palm. They were more than enough! A warm smile spread across his face as he realized that sometimes having less can be so much sweeter.

With his heart light and hand full of yummy filberts, Thomas savored each delicious nut, knowing he had learned a magical lesson that day.
