The Prince Who Knew the Truth

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

Once upon a time, in a forest bursting with vibrant flowers and dancing leaves just outside the lively city of Benares, a kind-hearted king wandered alone on a sunny afternoon. As he meandered through the woods, a sweet, melodious voice floated through the trees, twinkling like morning dew. Drawn by the enchanting sound, he followed it until he found a young woman, joyfully singing while gathering firewood. They laughed and shared stories beneath the tall, whispering trees, and before parting, the king removed his shiny royal ring and handed it to her. “If we have a son, bring him to me and show this ring,” he said with a warm smile.

Time passed, and a brave little boy named Arlo was born. His mother adored him, but she felt shy about the grand palace, so she kept the ring hidden away. As Arlo grew, he played with other children who teased him, chanting, “NO-FATHER! NO-FATHER!” This made Arlo run home with tears of frustration.

One day, his mother sat beside him with a gentle sigh and revealed, “My sweet boy, your father is the King of Benares.” Arlo’s eyes sparkled with newfound courage. “Then we must go to him!” he exclaimed, determination shining in his heart.

They ventured to the dazzling palace, where golden towers kissed the sky. Upon entering the grand hall, the king sat surrounded by nobles, his heart heavy with unspoken secrets. When he saw the woman, shame washed over him, and he turned away. “I don’t know you! I don’t have a son!” he boomed, his voice ringing like thunder.

The crowd gasped in shock, but the brave woman stood tall. “I have one last thing to show you. If he is truly your son, let him rise!” she declared. With strength and courage, she lifted Arlo high into the air! Instead of falling, he floated gracefully like a fluffy cloud, cross-legged and serene.

“Dear father,” Arlo’s voice chimed like a lovely bell, “you tend to every creature in the kingdom. Would you not care for your own son and his mother?” A hush enveloped the hall as the king’s heart melted. Tears brimmed in his eyes as he recognized the truth of Arlo's words.

“Come to me,” he whispered, arms outstretched. Arlo floated down gently into his father’s embrace, and in that moment, the king wept with tears of joy, love, and newfound understanding. They embraced tightly, knowing that love could overcome all barriers.
