The Blue Jackal

Panchatantra Tales

An ancient Panchatantra tale of clever animals, cunning tricks, and wisdom that has lasted thousands of years.

In a lively village, under the cover of the starry sky, a hungry jackal roamed, his tummy rumbling like a thunderstorm. As he scurried along, a pack of barking dogs spotted him. “WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!” they yelped, tails wagging as they chased him through narrow alleys. The jackal dashed like a bolt of lightning, leaping over fences and dodging corners. Suddenly—WHAM! He tumbled headfirst into a giant vat of bright blue dye from a friendly washerman. SPLOOSH! He emerged, dripping with sparkling blue, and gasped as he caught sight of himself in a nearby trough. His fur was now a dazzling shade of blue!

When the barking dogs saw this unusual creature, they skidded to a stop and bolted in fear. With newfound confidence, the jackal strutted back into the jungle, where all the animals froze in awe. “What is this strange creature?” they whispered, their eyes wide. Seizing the moment, the jackal boomed, “I am KAKUDRUMA, sent by Lord Brahma to be the king of the forest!” The animals bowed down, mesmerized by his vibrant color and commanding voice. Even the mighty lion and the graceful tiger showed respect, and Kakudruma reveled in his royal life, feasting on juicy berries and basking in the warmth of admiration.

But one moonlit night, the haunting howl of distant jackals stirred something deep within him. Unable to resist, he tilted his head back and HOWLED—a true jackal's call that echoed through the woods. Silence fell for a moment, then—CRASH! The animals he had tricked thundered toward him, their eyes blazing with anger. Kakudruma’s heart raced as he sprinted away, knowing he couldn’t escape his true self. His beautiful blue coat couldn’t shield him from the truth.

As the once-friendly forest closed in, Kakudruma realized that pretending to be someone he wasn't led him to this moment of fear, reminding him that even a king's crown can’t hide a heart's true colors.
