The Heron and the Fish

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Once upon a time, in a sparkling emerald forest, there lived a Heron named Hattie. With her tall, elegant legs and a beak that could reach the clouds, she was a sight to behold. One sunny morning, Hattie stood by a shimmering stream that glimmered like a thousand stars. Fish darted beneath the surface, wiggling and swirling, creating tiny waves that danced in the sunlight.

"Oh, look at those little fish!" Hattie exclaimed, ruffling her feathers in disdain. "Too small for a bird as grand as me!" With a swish of her tail, she turned her head away, convinced something better would swim by soon.

Not long after, a pair of shiny fish swam into view, their scales reflecting the sun like precious gems. Hattie’s eyes sparkled with interest. "Hmm, still not big enough!" she said with an impatient tap of her foot. She waited, dreaming of a feast fit for royalty.

As time ticked by, a plump little carp glided by, so close Hattie could almost taste it! But just as excitement bubbled in her chest, she frowned. "No, not quite large enough!" she decided, shaking her head.

Minutes turned into hours, and the sun climbed high, casting warm rays over the stream. The fish, sensing danger, swam deeper into the cool shadows, disappearing from sight. “Wait! Where are you going?” Hattie called, but the fish were too busy exploring the underwater world to hear her.

Finally, Hattie peered into the muddy bottom of the stream, and to her dismay, she found only a slimy little snail. With a heavy heart, she scooped it up and ate it, grimacing at the taste. “Oh dear,” she sighed, looking around at the empty stream. “How could I have let this happen?”

Realizing that her waiting for the perfect fish had cost her all the delicious ones, Hattie understood a valuable lesson. From that day forward, she learned to appreciate the treasures that came her way, because sometimes, the best bites are the ones right in front of us, just waiting to be enjoyed!
