The Jackdaw and the Peacocks

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a magical forest where sunlight danced through the leaves, the birds were excitedly preparing for their annual celebration. Each bird showed off their special beauty, but none shone quite like the dazzling Peacocks. With their bright green, gold, and blue feathers, they looked like jewels sparkling in the sun.

Among them was a little Jackdaw named Jax. His feathers were plain and black, and he often sighed as he admired the Peacocks from afar. “Oh, if only I had feathers like theirs,” he dreamed. “Then I would finally belong!”

One sunny day, while wandering near a garden wall, Jax stumbled upon a pile of shimmering Peacock feathers that had been carelessly tossed aside. His eyes widened in excitement. “What if I wear these?” he giggled, dreaming of looking magnificent. With careful paws, he picked up the feathers and tucked them into his wings and tail until he transformed into a colorful sight, dazzling in the sunlight!

Feeling bold, Jax soared toward the grand gathering. As he approached, heads turned, and gasps echoed through the trees. “Look at me!” he puffed out his chest, feeling like a star. But suddenly, the Peacocks spotted him! “Those are our feathers!” they squawked, their eyes aflame with anger.

Before Jax could flutter away, they swooped in, plucking their colorful plumes from him one by one. Jax flapped his wings in panic, but it was too late. He dashed away, feeling more ragged than ever.

When he returned to his fellow Jackdaws, they stared in disbelief. “You wanted to be better than us!” they cried, turning their backs. Alone and stripped of his borrowed beauty, Jax perched on a branch, heart heavy. He realized he had lost the trust of his own friends.

In that moment, he understood that true beauty lies in being yourself. With a newfound appreciation for his plain black feathers, Jax decided to embrace who he truly was, for he discovered that sometimes, the greatest treasure is simply being you.
