The Peacock and the Nightingale

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a magical royal garden, where flowers danced and the sun sparkled like diamonds, there lived a magnificent Peacock. His tail was a rainbow of colors—shimmering blues, radiant greens, and glimmers of gold that sparkled like treasure. Whenever he strutted across the garden, visitors would gasp in awe at his dazzling display. But deep inside, the Peacock felt a twinge of sadness, as if something was missing.

One evening, as the stars began to twinkle like tiny lanterns in the sky, a sweet melody drifted through the air. It was the Nightingale perched on a branch, singing a song so beautiful that even the roses leaned in closer to listen. The notes twirled and danced, wrapping around the garden like a magical spell. The Peacock's heart sank. “What good is my splendid tail?” he sighed. “The Nightingale's voice is a treasure! I would trade half my tail just to sing like her.”

Nearby, an old and wise Owl heard the Peacock's sorrow. With feathers as soft as clouds, the Owl hooted gently, “Why do you let your heart feel heavy? The Nightingale sings sweetly, but you shine like the sun! We all have our special gifts.”

But the Peacock couldn’t hear the Owl's words. He stared at his vibrant tail, feeling disappointed. Little did he know, while he lamented, the other creatures in the garden admired his feathers. Butterflies fluttered around him, creating a rainbow of colors in the air.

The wise Owl urged him, “Close your eyes and feel the wonder in your heart!” With a deep breath, the Peacock obeyed. As he listened to the lovely song, he remembered how his beauty brought joy to the garden. When he opened his eyes, he spread his magnificent tail wide, its colors sparkling brighter than ever. Butterflies danced around him, flowers swayed in delight, and the garden celebrated his glorious beauty.

With newfound joy, the Peacock smiled at the Nightingale and chirped, “Your song is beautiful, dear friend, and I am proud to be me!” From that day on, he cherished his colors, singing a melody of gratitude in his heart, knowing that everyone is wonderfully unique in their own way.
