The King and the Fool

Tenali Raman Tales

A hilarious Tenali Raman tale where wit, humour, and a sharp mind save the day!

As the golden sun sunk behind the tall trees, King Krishnadevaraya strolled through the palace gardens, where flowers danced in the soft breeze. Their colors sparkled like jewels, and the air was filled with sweet scents. Suddenly, he spotted Tenali Raman, hunched over a long piece of paper, scribbling with a look of great concentration. The king's curiosity buzzed like a bee. “What are you writing, Tenali?” he asked, leaning closer.

Tenali's face turned as pale as a cotton candy cloud. He quickly tried to fold the paper, but the king, quick as a flash, snatched it away! “Show me!” he commanded. Tenali’s heart raced like a galloping horse as he handed over the mysterious paper. The king's eyes widened when he saw the title at the top: “The Greatest Fools in the Kingdom.”

“What? MY NAME?!” he boomed, his voice echoing like thunder. The garden fell silent, and even the cheerful birds paused their singing. “It is… a list of the greatest fools, Your Majesty,” Tenali said, his voice trembling like a leaf in the wind.

The king slammed his fist against a marble pillar, making it tremble. “EXPLAIN!” he roared, his eyes narrowing dangerously. Taking a deep breath, Tenali summoned all his courage. “Three weeks ago, you gave five thousand gold coins to a horse trader you didn’t even know. He promised to bring back two magnificent horses, but now he’s vanished like a puff of smoke!”

The king furrowed his brow, listening carefully. “What if he comes back?” he asked nervously. A twinkle sparkled in Tenali's eye. “Oh! I’ll scratch your name off the list immediately!”

The king’s curiosity stirred. “And replace it with...?”

“Why, the trader’s name, of course! Only the greatest fool would dare return after stealing from the mightiest king!”

Just then, a sudden breeze rustled the leaves, and silence fell like a magic spell. Then, a chuckle escaped the king’s lips, growing louder until he burst into laughter, collapsing onto a nearby bench. His joy rang out like music, and soon tears of laughter streamed down his cheeks, making his crown tilt sideways.

“Tenali,” he gasped between giggles, “you are the most impossible man in this kingdom!” With a playful bow, Tenali replied, “Shall I add that to the list too?”

As laughter filled the garden, the king realized that true friends speak the truth, even when it stings. In the warmth of that joyous moment, bright days were born from honesty and friendship.
