The Bat and the Birds

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

In a magical land bursting with colors and sounds, a great war raged between the Birds, with their vibrant feathers, and the Beasts, proud and strong. The sun shone down warmly, but the air crackled with the sounds of flapping wings and roaring growls. It was a fierce battle, and every creature had to choose a side.

But in a shadowy cave at the edge of the forest lived a clever little Bat, who loved to watch the chaos unfold. "Why pick just one side when I can dance between both?" he thought, his shiny wings sparkling in the light. One sunny day, the Birds soared high, celebrating their victories with joyful songs. Bat fluttered out of his cave, flapping his wings and chirping, "Look at me! I’m a Bird!" The Birds giggled at the sight of the odd creature and let him join their fun, flying through the sky.

But oh, how quickly things changed! The Beasts began to roar mightily, marching through the trees. Bat swooped low, his furry coat glimmering as he shouted, "Wait! I’m a Beast too!" The Beasts looked at him, puzzled but too busy to care much.

Back and forth he went, flitting between the two sides, always eager to join the party. Days turned into weeks, and finally, when the war came to an end, both the Birds and Beasts gathered under the Great Oak Tree. They shared stories and laughter, feeling a warm sense of friendship.

Suddenly, they turned to Bat, their eyes full of questions. They remembered how he danced with them only when they were winning and how quickly he switched sides. A heavy silence fell over the crowd, and Bat's heart sank.

As the Birds sang sweet melodies and soared high above, and the Beasts feasted on tasty treats, Bat sat alone, watching from the shadows. Feeling emptier than ever, he flew away into the twilight, seeking refuge in dark caves. Each night, as he emerged quietly, he realized that in his quest to be liked by everyone, he lost his chance to truly belong.
