The Clever Antelope

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

In a vibrant, green forest of ancient India, where sunlight wiggled between the leaves and the air smelled sweet like candy, lived a smart antelope named Amani. Every day, Amani would prance through the woods, his ears standing tall and his eyes sparkling with wonder. His favorite place was a big, cheerful tree that showered him with juicy fruits whenever they were ripe and ready to eat.

One sunny morning, Amani trotted off to his special tree, excited for a tasty treat. But as he approached, something felt odd. The fruits were scattered on the ground, but they were arranged all too perfectly, as if someone was playing a sneaky game. Amani’s nose twitched as he sniffed the air. It was silent—too silent. Up high in the branches, a sly hunter named Arjun was hiding, his eyes glimmering with greed as he watched Amani closely. With a wicked grin, he tossed down some shiny fruits to lure the clever antelope.

Amani tilted his head, noticing how the fruits sparkled in the sun. “Hmm,” he thought, “fruits don’t fly; they fall softly from trees!” He took a step back and listened carefully. The leaves rustled in the breeze, but there were no joyful songs from the birds. Something was definitely wrong.

“Come closer, Amani! The fruits are delicious!” shouted Arjun, his patience wearing thin. But Amani stood tall and wise. He called out to the tree, “Dear friend, you’ve always shared your fruits in such a joyful way. But today, you are tossing them like a clown! I will not be tricked!”

The hunter fumed with fury. “You clever antelope! You escaped this time, but I will catch you next time!” he yelled, his voice bouncing off the trees.

With a knowing smile, Amani looked up at the tree and then at the hunter. “You may wish to catch me, but remember, the harm you bring may come back to you.” With that, Amani leaped gracefully into the forest, his legs dancing over bushes and flowers, disappearing like a whisper in the wind.

As he bounded away, Amani felt the sweet thrill of freedom. The forest welcomed him back with its cheerful chatter and the delightful smell of ripening fruits. He knew that cleverness and patience could outsmart even the trickiest traps, helping him find his way back home.
