Sinbad and the Old Man of the Sea

Arabian Nights Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wonder, magic, and timeless wisdom.

Sinbad the Sailor was a brave adventurer who had sailed through storms, battled monsters, and climbed tall giants! But one day, after five thrilling journeys, he faced his most peculiar challenge yet — an old man who simply wouldn’t let go!

One sunny morning, while sailing the shimmering seas, a fierce storm tossed Sinbad’s ship around like a toy! With a big splash, he found himself washed ashore on a magical island glittering with golden sand, colorful fruit trees, and cheerful birds singing sweet songs. As he wandered, he spotted a tiny old man sitting on a big rock beside a sparkling stream. The man had a long, fluffy white beard and eyes that looked as gloomy as dark clouds.

“Hello, dear grandfather!” called Sinbad, smiling brightly. “Would you like a ride across the stream?” The old man nodded, and Sinbad crouched down for him to hop onto his shoulders. But as soon as the old man settled in, he wrapped his legs around Sinbad’s neck like heavy vines! "Ouch!" squeaked Sinbad as he felt the old man's bony feet digging in.

Days turned into nights, and Sinbad trudged around the island, picking juicy fruits and feeling more tired by the minute. Other sailors whispered, “That’s the Old Man of the Sea! He never lets anyone escape!” But Sinbad was determined to outsmart him.

One day, he discovered a pile of fallen coconuts. With clever hands, he hollowed them out and squeezed the sweet juice inside. After leaving them in the warm sun for a few days, he created a fizzy drink! When he took a loud, refreshing sip, the old man perked up. “What’s that yummy drink?” he asked with eager eyes.

Sinbad offered him a coconut shell, and the old man gulped it down greedily! “More!” he shouted excitedly. With each sip, the old man’s frown faded, and his eyes grew droopy. At last, his grip began to loosen!

Seeing his chance, Sinbad ducked and dashed toward the beach, where a beautiful ship sailed by. He waved his arms wildly, shouting for help. The kind crew spotted him and quickly pulled him aboard.

As they sailed away, Sinbad looked back at the island and saw the Old Man of the Sea peacefully snoring under a coconut tree, a smile on his face. Sinbad’s heart danced with joy as he thought of the remarkable stories he would tell about his adventurous escape, knowing that even the grumpiest problems could be solved with a clever idea and a brave heart.
