The Plane Tree and the Travelers

Aesop's Fables

A timeless Aesop's fable retold for young readers — with a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

On a sweltering summer day, two tired Travelers trudged along a dusty road that sparkled like a treasure map under the blazing sun. Their feet felt like they had danced on hot coals, and their throats were as dry as the desert. Just when they thought they might melt away, they spotted a splendid Plane Tree ahead, its broad branches reaching out like welcoming arms.

As they ran towards the tree, a refreshing wave of shade rolled over them, wrapping them in a cool embrace like a magical blanket. With deep sighs of relief, they leaned against the sturdy trunk, and for a moment, the worries of the world faded away. Suddenly, one Traveler opened his eyes wide and looked up, squinting at the lush leaves above.

“This tree is nice,” he said lazily, “but what a useless thing it is!”

“Useless?” the other Traveler exclaimed, bewildered. “But it’s so grand and beautiful!”

“Look!” the first Traveler insisted, flinging his arm toward the branches. “It doesn’t have any figs, apples, or olives. What good is a tree without fruit?”

Just then, a gentle rustle filled the air, and the leaves trembled as if whispering secrets. A deep, booming voice echoed down from the Plane Tree. “Ungrateful Travelers!” it thundered, shaking the dust around them. “You enjoy my shade while calling me useless? My coolness eases your tired limbs and shields you from the fiery sun. Must every gift be something you can taste?”

The Travelers' faces flushed with embarrassment as they realized their mistake. They exchanged wide-eyed glances, understanding how they had overlooked the very comfort that surrounded them.

“Oh, great Tree,” the first Traveler stammered, his voice shaky with sincerity, “we are truly sorry. We didn’t recognize your shade as a wonderful gift.”

Filled with gratitude, the two Travelers stood tall and brushed the dust from their clothes. They thanked the Plane Tree with cheerful voices that danced in the warm air, their hearts lighter than before. As they continued on their adventure, they carried with them a new appreciation for the silent blessings that often go unnoticed, and the sun continued to shine brightly on the wise Plane Tree, who stood tall, watching over all the paths ahead.

The Moral of the Story

"Sometimes the best gifts are the ones we can't see or taste, like kindness and comfort."
