In a snug valley wrapped by tall, whispering mountains, the villagers lived in constant fear of a terrifying monster called Nian. Each year, as the last night of the old year approached, they would hurriedly pack their things and flee to the mountains, hiding from the creature that emerged from the ocean. Nian, as dark as a starless sky, had fierce, glimmering teeth and a voice that roared like thunder. With a rumble in its belly, it would munch on livestock, stomp through gardens, and even snatch wandering children!
But one year, when the villagers were about to escape, a wise old man with a twinkle in his eyes and a wooden staff arrived. He noticed that one elderly woman had stayed behind, too tired to climb. "You should go," she urged. Instead, the old man smiled and said, "Let’s make a plan!"
With magical energy, he began to cover the village in bright red paper and hung lanterns that sparkled like twinkling stars. Soon, the entire village glowed, a dazzling sea of red and gold, flickering against the darkening sky. He gathered firecrackers from every home, tying them together like a rainbow of surprises.
As midnight approached, the villagers felt the ground tremble. Nian was coming! The monstrous shadow loomed closer, its terrifying eyes searching for the frightened villagers. Just when it seemed all hope was lost, it halted, its eyes widening at the sight of so much bright red!
With a mighty roar, it tried to scare the villagers, but the old man was ready. He lit the first firecracker, and BOOM! CRACK! The sounds echoed like thunder, and the lanterns danced in delight. With a shriek of fright, Nian turned and splashed back into the ocean, never to return!
When dawn broke, the villagers emerged, their homes safe and glowing with joy. The old man had disappeared, leaving behind only laughter and courage. From that day on, they hung red paper, lit lanterns, and cracked firecrackers every New Year, celebrating their bravery and the light that chased away their fears.
