In a magical jungle where the trees tickled fluffy clouds, there lived a curious little elephant named Nelly. Nelly had soft, floppy ears and sturdy feet that made a delightful thump as she walked. But what made her truly special was her tiny, stubby nose, just the size of a little boot. It couldn’t grab the juiciest leaves at the top of the tallest trees, but Nelly didn’t mind! She loved exploring her colorful world and asking questions. “Why do butterflies have such colorful wings?” she asked a bright parrot. “Why does the river only flow one way?” she wondered to a lazy crocodile sunbathing on a rock. “Why does the moon peek out when the sun goes to sleep?” she asked a wise old tortoise who held many jungle secrets. Everyone adored Nelly’s sparkling eyes and her joyful bounces whenever she asked.
One sunny afternoon, Nelly waddled to the great grey-green river for one last question: “What do you have for supper?” With a sly smile, the crocodile replied, “Come closer, and I’ll show you!” Nelly leaned in, her eyes wide with curiosity, but suddenly—SNAP! The crocodile lunged and caught her tiny nose! “OW! OW! OW! You’re STRETCHING it!” Nelly squealed, digging her sturdy feet into the muddy bank. A wild tug-of-war began! The crocodile pulled toward the river, and Nelly pulled back to the jungle. HNNNNGG! The mud squelched, and the birds gasped, their eyes as big as saucers.
Then—POP! The crocodile let go, and Nelly tumbled into a soft bed of ferns. Dazed, she touched her nose and gasped—it was long! So long! She wiggled her magnificent new trunk, excitement bubbling inside her. She reached up to sip cool river water and sprayed it all over her warm grey back—SPLOOOSH! It felt wonderful!
With a giggle, Nelly wrapped her new trunk around her mother’s strong trunk for a massive hug. “Best question I ever asked!” she cheered, her heart soaring as the evening sun painted the jungle gold. Proudly, she trotted home, her fabulous new trunk swinging with every step, ready to discover more wonders in her magical world.
