The World Is Round

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

On a bright and sunny day in the grand palace of Emperor Akbar, a renowned astronomer burst through the doors, his eyes sparkling with excitement. He held a scroll in his hands, unfurling it like a magician revealing a wondrous trick. “Your Majesty!” he proclaimed, his voice booming like thunder. “I bring astonishing news! The world is ROUND, like a giant, shimmering ball dancing in the sky!”

Akbar’s eyes twinkled like stars as he leaned in closer. “How amazing! So if someone travels straight, they could return to where they began?” The astronomer nodded eagerly. “Yes, Your Majesty, theoretically!”

“Wonderful!” Akbar clapped his hands, making his crown jingle like a playful wind chime. “But how long would such an adventure take?”

The astronomer scratched his head, looking as puzzled as a cat in a cucumber patch. “It could take many years—perhaps a hundred or more! There are vast oceans, towering mountains, and wild jungles in the way.”

Suddenly, the court erupted into chaos. “Twenty-five years!” shouted one advisor, flailing his arms like a bird trying to take flight. “FIFTY!” bellowed another, his voice rumbling through the hall like a passing storm. “Pfft! Just eighty days!” chimed a third, as numbers swirled around like mischievous butterflies.

Amid the clamor, one figure stood still, his eyes sparkling with clever mischief. It was Birbal, the emperor's wise advisor. “Birbal, what do you think?” Akbar asked, curiosity sparkling in his eyes.

“I was busy calculating, Your Majesty,” Birbal said with a cheeky smile. The emperor leaned forward, heart racing with excitement.

“One day!” Birbal announced, his voice ringing like a bell on a joyful morning. The court went silent, jaws dropping like pebbles into a still pond. “ONE DAY?!” Akbar gasped, nearly tumbling from his throne. “It would take longer than that just to cross our kingdom!”

“True, Your Majesty,” Birbal replied, calm as a gentle breeze. “But unless you travel at the speed of the Sun, which circles the Earth in exactly one day—zoom! There you have it: one day!”

A moment of silence hung in the air, thick with wonder. Then, laughter erupted like a jubilant fountain! Akbar laughed so hard that his turban wobbled like a spinning top. The courtiers joined in, slapping their knees and wiping joyful tears from their eyes.

“Birbal, you turned an impossible question into a perfectly logical answer!” Akbar chuckled, shaking his head in delight. In the golden halls of the palace, everyone learned that sometimes, to solve a tricky problem, all you need is a sprinkle of imagination and a dash of cleverness to see things in a new light.
