The Rabbit and the Well

African Folktales

A beloved African folktale retold for young readers — rich with wisdom, wonder, and timeless lessons.

In a blazing land where the sun danced high in the sky, the animals faced a terrible problem. For forty long days, the sun sipped all the water away, leaving the rivers dry and their throats parched. The creatures of the savanna gathered together, determined to dig a great well to find water. Elephants stomped their feet, zebras galloped, monkeys chattered with excitement, and tortoises plodded along, all working hard together.

But one little Rabbit lounged in the shade, munching on sweet grass. “I’m too busy resting!” he yawned. This made the Elephant stomp his foot and declare, “Then you shall drink NOT ONE DROP!” The other animals nodded, and as night fell, they dreamt of cool, clear water.

Under the sparkling stars, the sneaky Rabbit tiptoed to the well and drank deeply, feeling like a balloon filled with water. The next morning, the animals set a guard, and Monkey stood watch. But the clever Rabbit hopped by, grinning. “Let’s wrestle for fun!” he said, and before Monkey knew it, the Rabbit had tied him to a tree!

That night, the fierce Leopard took his turn, but the Rabbit crept up and whispered spooky stories, making Leopard quiver and flee. All was quiet until the wise Tortoise made a sticky figure from mud and sap near the well. When the Rabbit arrived, he shoved the figure, but it didn’t budge! Frustrated, he pushed harder and got his paw stuck in the gooey mess!

The next morning, all the animals gathered around, laughing at the Rabbit’s predicament. “You thought you could trick us!” they teased. “Please don’t throw me into that thornbush!” begged the Rabbit. The Elephant pretended to think and then, with one mighty tug, freed him — sending the Rabbit flying straight into the thornbush!

Much to everyone’s surprise, the Rabbit burst out, chuckling as if he’d just enjoyed a fantastic adventure. He had been born among those thorns, and they felt just like home. The animals exchanged glances, realizing that while they had all worked hard, the Rabbit had chosen the easy way out. They learned that sharing work and rewards makes their community stronger, while the Rabbit discovered that his tricks could only get him so far.
