The Merchant and the Emperor

Akbar & Birbal Tales

A classic tale retold for young readers — full of wit, wisdom, and wonderful surprises.

In a dazzling palace that sparkled like a treasure chest, Emperor Akbar lounged on his magnificent throne, surrounded by colorful silks and the sweet sounds of laughter and music. One sunny afternoon, a nervous merchant from a faraway land tiptoed into the grand hall, hoping to impress the wise Emperor and strike a golden trade deal.

“Your Majesty,” he bowed deeply, his heart thumping like a drum, “you shine brighter than the sun itself!” But Akbar just raised an eyebrow, his face as still as a statue. The merchant gulped and tried again, “Oh glorious Emperor, you are as noble as the mightiest kings!” Still, Akbar remained unmoved, a mysterious smile playing on his lips.

Desperate, the merchant took a deep breath, spreading his arms wide like a bird ready to soar. “Your Majesty, you are GREATER THAN GOD HIMSELF!” The court gasped, their eyes widening like saucers. Silence fell like a heavy blanket, and even the guards held their breath, worried about what could happen next.

Birbal, Akbar’s clever advisor, felt a shiver of tension in the air. He stepped forward, his mind whirling like a whirlwind. “Your Majesty,” he said calmly, “he is absolutely right.” The merchant’s eyes grew wider, and the courtiers gasped once more.

Birbal continued, “There’s one thing you can do that even God cannot: You can banish someone from your kingdom! God can never send anyone away because the universe belongs to Him. But you, Emperor, can send anyone packing!”

A hush fell over the court as Birbal’s wise words danced through the air. Suddenly, Akbar burst into laughter, his booming chuckle echoing through the hall like the sound of a thousand bells. “Then, let’s banish this merchant for his foolishness!” he bellowed, still chuckling.

The court erupted with laughter, the tension melting away like ice on a sunny day. The merchant, though bewildered, couldn’t help but join in, his heart lifting with the joyful spirit of the moment. Birbal bowed gracefully, knowing that a sprinkle of cleverness had turned a tricky situation into a delightful celebration.
