The Mighty Bull of Benares

Jataka Tales

An ancient Jataka tale of compassion and wisdom — a story that has been told for over two thousand years.

In the sunny village of Benares, there lived a kind old woman with a heart as big as the sky. Her very best friend was a playful little calf named Blackie. From the moment she first held him close, magic sparkled around them. Every day, she fed him the tastiest rice and the sweetest porridge, and when he nuzzled her hand, it felt like a warm hug from the sun.

As the years danced by, Blackie grew into the mightiest bull in the land, with a shiny coat that sparkled like stars. He was gentle and strong, and the village children loved to climb on his back and swing from his mighty horns. But even though he was the happiest bull, Blackie could see that his Grandma was tired and struggling, working hard without asking for help.

One bright morning, Blackie decided it was time to help his beloved Grandma. He trotted to the river, where a huge caravan of five hundred carts was stuck on the other side, unable to cross the wild, roaring water. The leader of the caravan looked worried and scratched his head. Suddenly, he spotted Blackie standing tall and strong. “Come here, mighty bull!” he called.

But Blackie stood firm, his hooves planted like ancient trees. “I’ll help you, but only if you promise me two shiny gold coins for each cart!” he declared bravely. The leader agreed, and with a mighty heave and a joyful splash, Blackie began to pull the first cart through the rushing river.

“HEAVE! SPLASH! HEAVE! SPLASH!” Water sprayed everywhere as villagers cheered for their hero! One by one, Blackie pulled all five hundred carts to safety, his strength sparkling like magic in the air.

But just as the last cart crossed, the greedy leader tried to trick Blackie, hanging only five hundred coins around his neck. Blackie stood still as a mountain! The other bulls, inspired by his bravery, joined him, refusing to budge. The caravan came to a stop!

Realizing he was outsmarted, the leader sighed and hung the full thousand coins around Blackie's neck. Proudly, Blackie trotted home. When Grandma saw the treasure, she rushed over and lovingly washed his tired legs, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes. “Oh, my dear Blackie, you didn’t have to do this for me,” she whispered with a smile.

Blackie gazed back at her with wise, dark eyes, and in that moment, they shared a bond stronger than any treasure. No matter how tough life got, their love would always shine brighter than gold.
